Goodbye Shampoo: Embracing Natural Hair Care
Welcome back to my series on “The Things I No Longer Buy”! Today, we’re tackling a household staple that many people consider essential: shampoo and conditioner. As someone who has found freedom in skipping commercial hair products, I’m excited to share my journey, insights, and effective alternatives that have made a significant difference in my life—and can do the same for you.
We Are Mammals
Let’s start with a fact: we are mammals. Just like bears and lions, our bodies are designed to self-regulate oil production and keep our hair clean. Have you ever seen a bear shampooing its fur? Of course not! They thrive in nature without human intervention, and so can we.
The Shampoo Cycle
Now, let’s talk about shampoo. Many people mistakenly believe that using it is necessary for clean hair. However, shampoo strips your scalp’s natural oils, causing your body to overreact by producing more oil. This creates a frustrating cycle: the more you shampoo, the greasier your hair becomes, which makes you want to shampoo again. It’s a never-ending loop!
This cycle can even raise concerns about potential harm to your thyroid. Essentially, we’ve been tricked into depending on a product that our bodies were designed to function without.
Breaking Free from Shampoo
The good news is, you can break this cycle! Doing so will save you time and money and make traveling much more convenient. Nowadays, I simply rinse my hair whenever I feel like it—or sometimes just take a dip in the creek!
As you wean yourself off shampoo, you can manage excess oil and condition your hair as needed with a few simple recipes. The key is to gradually extend the time between washes until you realize that you no longer need to use anything at all.
Baking Soda & Vinegar Method
One effective method to transition from shampoo is the baking soda and vinegar approach. Here’s what you need to do:
1. Prepare Your Bottles:
– In one squeeze bottle, mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda with 12 oz of warm water.
– In another bottle, combine 1 tablespoon of raw apple cider vinegar with 12 oz of warm water.
2. In the Shower:
– Use bottle #1 on your scalp, scrubbing gently. Rinse thoroughly.
– Use bottle #2, focusing on the ends of your hair. Rinse well again.
Optional: You can add essential oils, such as rosemary, to the vinegar bottle for added benefits.
Some people with dry hair may find it helpful to rub coconut oil, or another natural oil, into their dry hair as needed.
Soap Nuts Method
Another great option is to use soap nuts. Here’s how to do it:
1. Purchase soap nuts, which can be ground into a powder.
2. Make a tea using 1 teaspoon of soap nuts powder and 12 oz of water, then strain it into a squeeze bottle.
3. Alternatively, place 5 whole soap nuts in a squeeze bottle and fill it with warm tap water. This method is quick and easy, working best as you near the end of your shampoo weaning process.
If your hair becomes too dry, you can use the vinegar rinse mentioned earlier (as well as applying coconut oil when your hair is dry).
CAUTION – soap nuts tea can irritate your eyes!
My Experience
Today, I’ve been shampoo-free for 15 years! I rinse my hair whenever I feel like it or indulge in a refreshing swim in the lake. It’s that simple. God’s ways are not burdensome and don’t require spending a lot of money. Every time we discover something we no longer need to buy, we take another step closer to returning to the garden.
